Windham’s comeback not enough as Cheverus holds on

CHEVERUS 64, WINDHAM 59:    Jesse Matthews had 18 points and grabbed 10 boards to lead a balanced attack as the Stags (3-0) defeated the Eagles (0-2) at Portland.

Cheverus had a 15-point halftime lead, 39-24, but Windham rallied in the second half, paced by Mike Gilman, who scored all of his 17 points in the second half, cutting the Stags’ lead to a  point with 57 seconds to play in regulation.

The Stags hit 4 of 6 free throws in the final seconds to hold on for the victory.

Jack Casale had 16 points and dished out seven assists for Cheverus, while Tobias Ephron and Matt Duchaine each tossed in 11 points.

Nick Curtis had a game-high 19 points for Windham.
